Airport leaders describe plan to allow for more private jets
Posted: March 1st, 2010

Neighbors, prepare for landing.

More space for private jets is on tap at Mineta San Jose International Airport, and city aviation leaders met recently with residents who live near the flight path to explain their plan.

Related to the airport's three-year, $1.8 billion overhaul, the long-term parking lot near De La Cruz Boulevard and Martin Avenue could be transformed into a hangar and lounge for private jets, pilots and clients that includes a fueling station and pilot preparation area.

David Vossbrink, a spokesman for the airport, said airport leaders tentatively plan to ask the San Jose City Council in May to change the airport's master plan, and a request for proposals would follow.

Vossbrink said a recent consultant study indicated that housing more private jets could generate up to $4 million annually for the city's ailing general fund.

"It's essentially a private airport within an airport," Vossbrink said.

Vossbrink added that the area is now zoned for an expanded cargo jet area, and cargo jets are much noisier than private planes.

The 5,000 parking spaces for long-term and employee parking is in an industrial area that is blocks from the nearest homes, and it is set to be relocated closer to the terminals.
