Ever want to buy a plane but thought it might be too expensive?
A new type of aircraft is making it easier to own and fly a plane. And a new local company is helping make that a reality for people all over the country.
Southeast Light Sport Aviation at Herlong Airport on the Westside opened in January and sells two-seater planes for less than $100,000, according to owner William Bryce.
What's the difference between his company's planes and more conventional small aircraft? According to Bryce, the planes are lighter, and use newer technology and less fuel - about 5 gallons an hour. Not to mention, unlike regular planes, fliers can use regular gasoline in the planes.
Attorney Matt McMahan, 54, flew down from New York to buy a plane from Bryce. He's been flying since 1989 and said he was tired of having to get periodical medical exams that are required with normal aircraft. With the light sport planes, pilots can fly if they are healthy enough to keep a regular driver's license.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, aircraft classified as "Light Sport" can weigh no more than 1,320 pounds with two occupants. They have an unpressurized cabin and fixed landing gear, and can hold up to two people and reach a maximum speed of about 138 mph.
McMahan said he used to fly a Piper, and that the Light Sport planes are different to fly - they are easier and more forgiving. They also have a completely clear top, giving a 360-degree view.
